Sunday, July 19 Into Monday, July 20: NWS Dense Smoke Advisory for Lake Michigan Waters (Sheboygan to Port Washington) — Ends 7:00 a.m. CDT Monday
Sheboygan area boaters and shoreline users planning an early Monday run should note an NWS Dense Smoke Advisory covering Lake Michigan waters from Sheboygan to Port Washington remains in effect through 7:00 a.m. CDT Monday, July 20.
In its Sunday, July 19 update, the National Weather Service said dense smoke may reduce visibility to about 1 nautical mile (NM) or less, which can make navigation difficult.
What NWS says to do during the advisory window
If you must be on the water between now and 7:00 a.m. CDT Monday, July 20, NWS recommends the following preparedness steps for reduced-visibility conditions:
- Proceed with caution in smoke-reduced visibility.
- Use proper fog signals.
- Make sure running lights are on.

Before backing out of a marina or starting a nearshore crossing, consider a quick pre-departure check:
- Confirm you have adequate safety gear and a workable plan if visibility drops.
