I-43 Resurfacing Underway in Town of Wilson
A major Wisconsin Department of Transportation project is now underway along Interstate 43 in the Town of Wilson, bringing lane reductions and periodic ramp closures that will affect local commuters through the 2026 construction season.
Work began March 2 on a 10-mile stretch of I-43 from Wilson/Lima Road in the Town of Wilson north to WIS 42 in the Town of Sheboygan. The $21 million project includes removing deteriorated pavement, resurfacing with new asphalt, and performing maintenance on nine bridges within the corridor.
Motorists should expect reduced lanes in both directions at various points in the work zone, along with temporary closures of several on- and off-ramps. Traffic impacts will vary as construction progresses, and drivers are encouraged to plan extra travel time, especially during peak commuting hours.
According to state transportation officials, the improvements are designed to extend the life of the roadway and associated structures while enhancing safety features such as guardrails, pavement markings, and sign structures. The project is expected to continue through late October 2026.
For Town of Wilson residents who rely on I-43 for daily travel to Sheboygan, Kohler, Oostburg, or points south, this will be one of the most significant road projects of the year.
What Residents Should Know
• Expect single-lane traffic in portions of the corridor.
• Watch for changing ramp access near Wilson/Lima Road.
• Bridge maintenance work may result in additional short-term adjustments.
• Construction is anticipated to wrap up in fall 2026.
Drivers are reminded to slow down in work zones and stay alert for crews and equipment.
Looking Ahead
With warmer weather arriving — Sunday is forecast to be sunny near 60 degrees — construction activity is likely to increase in the coming weeks. Residents may also notice more heavy equipment and contractor presence along frontage roads and interchanges tied to the I-43 corridor.
As additional traffic notices or schedule changes are announced, they will be posted through official DOT project channels.
