I-43 Reconstruction Begins in Sheboygan County
Reconstruction on Interstate 43 in Sheboygan County officially began March 2 and is scheduled to continue through late October or early November, weather permitting. The large-scale project is expected to bring periodic traffic changes that could affect Cascade-area drivers throughout the construction season.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the work includes replacing deteriorating pavement, preserving and maintaining bridge structures, grading roadside slopes, and updating roadway signage. Crews have started with tree clearing and installing right-of-way fencing. These early phases are designed to prepare the corridor for heavier work later this spring and are expected to cause minimal short-term traffic disruptions.
When to Expect Lane Closures
More noticeable impacts are anticipated later in March, when longer-term lane closures begin and extend through much of the summer. From July through November, intermittent lane closures are planned during non-peak travel times to help manage traffic flow.
Several areas are expected to experience concentrated construction activity:
- Highway PP overpass: Extended lane closures are scheduled from July through September.
- I-43 and Highway 23 interchange: Bridge work here is projected to create some of the most significant disruptions. Collector and distributor ramps are expected to be affected for approximately 35 days in mid-summer.
These phases may lead to shifting traffic patterns and temporary bottlenecks, particularly during higher-volume travel periods.
What It Means for Cascade Commuters
Residents of Cascade who rely on I-43 to travel toward Sheboygan, Plymouth, or Fond du Lac should anticipate potential delays as the project moves into its more intensive stages. While early-season work is relatively low impact, mid- to late-summer construction is likely to add travel time, especially during peak commuting hours.
Drivers are encouraged to stay informed through official project updates and to build extra time into their schedules when heading north or south on I-43. Planning alternate routes in advance may also help reduce frustration once longer-term closures take effect.

Although the heaviest construction impacts are expected later this spring and summer, early awareness gives Cascade-area motorists an opportunity to prepare. Additional announcements regarding lane closures, ramp impacts, and traffic shifts are expected as the project progresses through each phase.
