Sheboygan’s JMKAC Ranked No. 6 on ARTnews U.S. Museum List
Sheboygan, Wis. — August 31, 2026. The John Michael Kohler Arts Center has been ranked No. 6 on ARTnews’ list of the 30 Best Art Museums in the United States, giving a Sheboygan cultural institution prominent national visibility.
JMKAC is located at 608 New York Avenue in Sheboygan. On the ARTnews list, it was placed between the Getty Center at No. 5 and the Whitney Museum of American Art at No. 7.
WHBL reported the recognition on August 11, 2026. The Beacon also covered the ranking in its August 25, 2026 issue, and JMKAC acknowledged the placement through an official organization post.
National attention for a Sheboygan institution
The placement is a ranking by a national arts publication, not a formal award. Still, it gives residents another way to highlight the arts center when recommending Sheboygan to visiting friends, family members and travelers.
The recognition may also increase interest in JMKAC and Sheboygan’s broader arts and visitor offerings, although there is not yet evidence showing that the ranking has increased attendance, tourism spending or bookings. Its immediate value is the national attention it brings to a cultural institution based in the city.
Planning a visit to JMKAC
JMKAC’s 2026 visitor materials list free self-guided group tours by reservation and note that the museum is closed Mondays. Visitors should check JMKAC’s official website for current hours, exhibitions, accessibility information, programs and tour details before making plans.
The separate JMKAC Art Preserve is located at 3636 Lower Falls Road in Sheboygan. Together, the sites give residents and visitors additional ways to explore the arts in the county.
A nationally ranked museum in Sheboygan is a point of local pride and a useful recommendation for anyone planning an arts and culture visit in the area.
