Plymouth Startup Tackles Invasive Zebra Mussels with Innovative Solutions
A startup based in Plymouth, Wisconsin is looking to mitigate the trillions of invasive zebra mussels in the Great Lakes by harvesting them for use in paper and pharmaceutical products. AntiMussel, the company founded by Tyler Rezachek, has raised nearly $20,000 in funding and placed second in county and regional pitch competitions. AntiMussel aims to launch a pilot program this spring to remove the mollusk from Lake Michigan, using a suction to the lake floor and transporting them to shore. The company also hopes to use the abundance of zebra mussels as a renewable resource for calcium carbonate, which is typically processed from limestone into products like Tums, white melamine paint, and plastic.
