Brief, Intense Downpour Causes Localized Flooding—but Drains Held Fast

SHEBOYGAN, WI — July 16, 2025
A fast-moving thunderstorm swept through Sheboygan late Wednesday afternoon, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and a brief flash flood scare—but the city’s storm drains ultimately kept pace with the deluge.
⚡ Storm Timing & Duration
The National Weather Service issued a Tornado Watch and warned of heavy storms expected to drop 1 to 2 inches of rain between 4:00 and 7:00 PM. Fortunately, the strongest part of the storm lasted only 20 to 30 minutes, peaking through the 5 PM hour before quickly tapering off.
Some lightning and wind gusts accompanied the storm, but no tornadoes or hail were confirmed in Sheboygan County.
📸 Impact Seen from the Front Door
On the ground, storm drains briefly struggled to keep up. At 11th & Indiana Avenue, rainwater surged into the street and sidewalk, causing temporary pooling that forced passing vehicles to kick up fan-shaped sprays of water.
Photos from residents show cars moving slowly through submerged curbs, but within 15 minutes of the storm’s peak, water levels began to recede. No significant road closures or basement flooding were reported.
It was a textbook example of brief but intense flooding—and how quickly it can subside when infrastructure holds up.
✅ What the News Said
Local outlets including WHBL, TMJ4, and FOX6 all reported on the storm’s intensity but noted that it was not classified as severe. Forecasts correctly predicted rapid clearing following the burst of rainfall.
Even with a Tornado Watch in effect, the system moved swiftly without escalation, and emergency alerts remained precautionary throughout.
