1935: United States senator and former Louisiana governor Huey Long was fatally shot at the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. he died two days later.
1966: “Star Trek: The Original Series” premiered on NBC, introducing the world to Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and the USS Enterprise. In “The cage” cast Jeffrey Hunter as Christopher Pike, commanding officer of the USS Enterprise in 2254. Majel Barrett as Number One, first officer in 2254.
1971: The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was opened in Washington, D.C.
1973: Hank Aaron hit his 709th home run, moving into second place on the all-time list behind Babe Ruth.
1974: President Ford addressed the nation from the Oval Office to announce his decision to “grant a full, free and absolute pardon unto Richard Nixon for all offenses against the United States which he, Richard Nixon, has committed or may have committed.”
2022: Queen Elizabeth passed away at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, at the age of 96. The Queen was the longest reigning monarch of the UK, having been on the throne for 70 years. She became Queen on February 6, 1952, and was crowned the following year on June 2, 1953. Queen Elizabeth II was only 27 years old when she became Queen of England
