New area code for Sheboygan area code overlay in northeast Wisconsin and the steps residents should take to avoid any issues.

What’s an area code overlay?

An overlay is the addition of a new area code to the same geographic region as an existing area code to allow a continuing supply of new phone numbers. The area code 274 will be added to the existing 920 area code, serving residents in northeast Wisconsin. An overlay doesn’t require customers to change their existing area code.

The 920 area code includes:

  • Berlin
  • Fond du Lac
  • Fort Atkinson
  • Green Bay
  • Manitowoc
  • Oshkosh
  • Rippon
  • Sheboygan
  • Sturgeon Bay
  • Watertown

The new 274 area code will serve the same communities currently covered by the 920 area code.

What’s the new dialing procedure?

To complete calls, callers will need to dial 1+ area code plus telephone number, or area code plus telephone number if calling from a mobile phone. The same dialing procedure will apply to telephone numbers assigned to the new 274 area code.

What do you need to do?

To complete local calls, you’ll need to dial area code plus telephone number or one plus area code plus telephone number.

You are also urged to make sure that all services, automatic dialing systems, or other types of equipment recognize the new 274 area code. Some examples of such services and equipment include:

  • Stored telephone numbers in contact lists on wireless phones
  • PBXs
  • Fax machines
  • Internet dial-up numbers
  • Speed dialers
  • Call forwarding settings
  • Voicemail services
  • Medical alert devices
  • Safety alarm security systems and gates
  • Ankle monitors
  • and/or other similar devices.

Materials or websites where your personal or business telephone number is displayed should be checked to ensure that the area code is included. Examples of these materials include:

  • Your website
  • Personal and business stationary
  • Printed checks
  • Advertising materials
  • Contact information
  • and your personal or pet ID tags.

What will remain the same?

  • Your telephone number, including your current area code, won’t change.
  • Your billing rate, coverage area, and other rates for services won’t change due to this overlay.
  • What is a local call now will remain a local call regardless of the number of digits dialed.
  • You can still dial just three digits to reach 911 and 988, as well as 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711 or 811 if those numbers are available in your community.
