The Sheboygan Midwest Challenge was an eventful, fun-filled weekend that kicked off on Friday, August 9th, and continued until Sunday, August 11th. The excitement began with the pits being open to the public at Deland Park, allowing spectators to get up close to the boats. Following this, the boats were tested on the water, and the first day of fun concluded with a block party and concert at City Green, where the Army Rock Band and King of Mars performed.
Saturday marked the first day of racing, starting with an opening ceremony followed by the qualifying race. The day featured three thrilling races in the Superstock, 450R, Super V, and Class 1 categories. The crowd was on edge when the Celsius boat flipped in the water, but thanks to the quick response from paramedic teams and helicopter crews, no one was injured. Kudos to these teams for their tireless efforts in keeping all participants safe, as they are always prepared for any kind of situation.
Sunday, the final day of this exciting weekend, was when I ventured into the world of speedboat racing. With a VIP pass in hand, I had the opportunity to cover the story behind the scenes. As the final races in the Class 1 MAV TV, Bracket Class 700, 600, and 500 categories got underway, I took the chance to explore the food trucks and grab a bite to eat. At 1:15 pm, there was a break to refuel the boats, giving me the opportunity to meet up with my co-worker and get some coverage of the event while meeting some amazing people.
On Friday, as I was on my way to pick up my media pass, I stopped a gentleman to ask for directions to the Sheboygan Youth Sailing Center. He kindly directed me, and I thanked him with a handshake, not realizing who I was speaking to. After introducing myself and handing him my Sheboygan Life card, he introduced himself as Asif Rangoonwala, the founder of London-based P1 Offshore, and mentioned that his son, Azam Rangoonwala, was the CEO. Asif has been honored for his extensive philanthropic work in the UK, Pakistan, and South Asia. Asif received the Commander of the British Empire honor from King Charles III. I was totally shocked to have encountered the two owners right off the bat!
After this encounter, I continued to the Sheboygan Youth Sailing Center to pick up my pass, where I met Lucy Nicandri, the Media/Marketing Officer for Powerboat P1. Lucy, with her outgoing and bubbly personality, warmly welcomed me to the Sheboygan Midwest Challenge. Later, upon meeting up with my co-workers, Paul and Katie, we had the pleasure of meeting the Mayor of Sheboygan, Ryan Sorenson. I was very surprised during our conversation because I didn’t realize he was the mayor until he introduced himself. I was quite apologetic when he told me who he was, and in disbelief, I exclaimed, “But you’re so young!” Mayor Sorenson chuckled and asked, “What can I do for you?” Unfortunately, just as I was about to ask him some questions, he was pulled away for another commitment. A mayor’s job is never done!
Throughout the weekend, I realized how friendly everyone was—not just the event attendees, but also the staff. Just before the award ceremony, we entered the VIP tent, which was elegantly set up. They served food for the VIPs, and we enjoyed a few beers while continuing to have a great time. After we had our fill, Paul and I had the honor of standing tall alongside Mayor Sorenson and Azam Rangoonwala, capturing an amazing snapshot taken by none other than Katie, our camerawoman. Thank you, Katie! We proudly held up the Sheboygan Life banner.” It was truly an honor to meet them both.
Finally, at 5:30 pm, the awards ceremony began, concluding an unforgettable weekend at the Sheboygan Midwest Challenge.
