Sheboygan County boasts a surprisingly rich sports and recreation history that includes moments of national significance in both basketball and motorsports. While today the area is known for its outdoor activities and scenic beauty, Sheboygan’s early sports history includes notable achievements, such as the rise and fall of the Sheboygan Red Skins and the beginnings of road racing in Elkhart Lake.
The Sheboygan Red Skins: A Basketball Legacy
A lesser-known but fascinating chapter in Sheboygan’s history is the story of the Sheboygan Red Skins, a professional basketball team that played in the early days of what would become the National Basketball Association (NBA). Founded in 1938, the Sheboygan Red Skins were a dominant force in the National Basketball League (NBL), a precursor to the NBA. The team achieved significant success, winning the NBL Championship during the 1942-43 season, solidifying their place in basketball history.
In 1949, with the formation of the National Basketball Association, the Red Skins became one of the league’s original teams, competing in the newly formed NBA during the 1949-50 season. Although the franchise folded in 1951, their brief but impactful existence is still remembered fondly by Sheboygan residents, especially for the home games played at the Sheboygan Municipal Armory. The team’s legacy is a unique claim to fame for a small city, and it remains a point of pride for Sheboygan’s sports history.
Elkhart Lake and the Birth of Road Racing
In addition to its basketball history, Sheboygan County played a significant role in the development of American motorsports. In the early 1950s, Elkhart Lake became a hub for road racing, with enthusiasts holding races on public roads around the village. These early races, held from 1950 to 1952, attracted drivers and spectators from across the country and helped establish Elkhart Lake as a key location for motorsports.
The popularity of these road races ultimately led to the creation of Road America, a permanent 4-mile race track located just outside Elkhart Lake. Opened in 1955, Road America has since become one of the premier road racing tracks in the world, hosting major events and drawing fans from around the globe. The early road races in Elkhart Lake laid the foundation for what would become a world-renowned motorsports venue, and they remain an important part of Sheboygan County’s sports heritage.
