1901: President McKinley is shot and fatally wounded in Buffalo, New York by an anarchist named Leon Czolgosz.
1915: The first tank sponsored by the First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill was produced named Little Willie in a factory in England, before the end of World War I the British were using them to fight the Germans.
1916: The first self-service grocery store, Piggly Wiggly, was opened in Memphis, Tennessee, by Clarence Saunders.
1970: Jimi Hendrix played his final concert at the Isle of Fehmarn in Germany.
1997: Princess Diana’s funeral and the four mile procession which took her coffin to Westminster Abbey is watched by over a million people lining the route and an estimated 2.5 billion people around the world, the number reflecting how many around the world have a place in their hearts for “The Peoples Princess”. After the services at Westminster Abbey a private ceremony is held out of the public eye when Diana is finally laid to rest on an island in the heart of her family estate at Althorp.
