1934: 2023, marks the 89th anniversary of the Detroit Lions’ first game after moving from Portsmouth, Ohio, as the Spartans. They hosted the New York Giants at the University of Detroit Stadium in front of roughly 12,000 fans. It was an exciting affair to see two squads that had been at the top of the NFL landscape for the past few seasons get the season started in a new environment.
1952: Vice Presidential Candidate Richard M. Nixon running mate of General Dwight D. Eisenhower goes on television to defend against allegations of a secret cash fund provided by his sponsors. In his speech to defend himself he provided an independent third-party review of the fund’s accounting, the speech gained additional publicity when he stated he had been given an American Cocker Spaniel named “Checkers” but he was not going to give the dog back. Because of this one fact many refer to his speech as the “Checkers speech.”
1952: Rocky Marciano knocked out world heavyweight champion Jersey Joe Walcott
1957: Under federal troop escort, the Little Rock Nine made it inside for their first full day of school. The 101st Airborne left in October and the federalized Arkansas National Guard troops remained throughout the year. The Little Rock Nine had assigned guards to walk them from class to class.
1875: Billy the Kid is arrested for the first time after stealing a basket of laundry. He later broke out of jail and roamed the American West, eventually earning a reputation as an outlaw and murderer and a rap sheet that allegedly included 21 murders.

Born to a wealthy family, at age 18 he was named adoptive son and heir of his great-uncle Julius Caesar.
- Bruce Springsteen (1949) – The American rock singer-songwriter often referred to as “The Boss.” He’s known for hits such as “Born to Run” and “Born in the U.S.A.”
- Ray Charles (1930-2004) – Iconic American singer, songwriter, and musician. Often referred to as “The Genius” and remembered for hits like “Georgia on My Mind” and “Hit the Road Jack.”
- John Coltrane (1926-1967) – An influential American jazz saxophonist and composer.
- Mickey Rooney (1920-2014) – American film, television, and stage actor whose career spanned nearly nine decades.
- Walter Pidgeon (1897-1984) – Canadian-American actor who starred in many films, including “Mrs. Miniver” and “Forbidden Planet.”
- Tom Lester (1938-2020) – American actor and evangelist, best known for his role as Eb Dawson on the television series “Green Acres.
- Anthony Mackie (1978) – Known for his portrayal of Sam Wilson / Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. By 2021, he took on the mantle of Captain America in the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”
