1937: J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” is first published which follows the quest of home-loving Bilbo Baggins.
1969: 200 squatters members of the so called “London Street Commune” who have occupied 144 Piccadilly for the last 6 days are evicted when police storm the 100-room building.
1981: Sandra Day O’Connor was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the first female justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
2012: New Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalegn is sworn in after the death of Meles Zenawi in August after twenty-one years in power. Desalegn had been the foreign minister and deputy prime minister.
2013: Over sixty people are killed and another 120 people are injured after suicide bombers attack a funeral in Baghdad. Two explosions hit mourners who had been in a tent and then a third explosion was set off as the police and ambulances gathered to help. The explosions started fires in the surrounding areas. No particular group claimed responsibility for the attacks
