1941: Construction on the Pentagon began exactly 60 years to the day before the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

1970: Ford’s answer was the Pinto, a chunky two-door fastback introduced. Developed as Project Phoenix, it began life in the mid-’60s codenamed the G-Car, with a transverse inline four mounted in the rear.

1973: Chilean coup d’état: The Chilean military staged a coup against President Salvador Allende, who died during the takeover.

1987: No news is usually good news, but that night Dan Rather stormed off the set of the CBS Evening News when a tennis match threatened to cut into his broadcast.

2001: The most tragic and significant event on this date, the 9/11 terrorist attacks: Two planes crashed into New York City’s Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, another hit the Pentagon, and a fourth, United Flight 93, crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to retake the plane from hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people were killed.
