Sheboygan’s Own Doris Kultgen Receives Prestigious DNR Legacy Award
Sheboygan, Wisconsin – Kohler-Andrae State Park has a special gem in Doris Kultgen, who has been serving the park and its visitors for 28 years. For her unwavering dedication, hard work and commitment, Kultgen was awarded the 2022 LTE Legacy Award from Wisconsin DNR Parks and Recreation.
Kultgen’s role at Kohler-Andrae has been diverse and dynamic over the years, ranging from customer service to park maintenance and building cleaning. For the past 20 years, she has been the driving force behind the park’s interpretive and social programming, which includes over 100 events each year. This requires a great deal of organization, coordination and planning, and Kultgen has always been up to the task.
According to Kohler-Andrae Park Superintendent Sara Crook, Kultgen’s greatest strength is her ability to connect with people. “Doris has an amazing way with people, developing long-term relationships with presenters, volunteers, staff, and Friends members,” Crook said. “She plays a key role in developing a top-notch interpretive program at the property.”
Kultgen, who was born and raised on a small family farm in rural Sheboygan Falls, has always had a deep appreciation for nature. She never expected her job at Kohler-Andrae to last this long, but her love for the park and the people she has met along the way have kept her coming back for more.
When asked about her favorite aspect of Kohler-Andrae, Kultgen pointed to the park’s location along the shores of Lake Michigan. “At first, I just took it for granted,” she said, “but now I appreciate the beauty and majesty of the lake and how it draws visitors from far and wide.”
However, the park is facing challenges with budget constraints and a shortage of staff. The increasing number of visitors every year has made it difficult to maintain the park to the high standards that visitors expect and deserve. Kultgen and the Kohler-Andrae team are determined to overcome these challenges and continue to provide an exceptional park experience to all who visit.
In conclusion, Doris Kultgen’s legacy at Kohler-Andrae State Park will be remembered for years to come. Her dedication, passion and commitment to the park, its visitors and the community make her a true treasure of Sheboygan.
