The Sheboygan County Historical Research Center

The Sheboygan County Historical Research Center is an organization that was founded in the early 1980s by members of the Sheboygan County Historical Society, Sheboygan County Genealogy Society, and Sheboygan County Landmarks, Ltd. Its purpose is to serve as a central location for the documentation of Sheboygan County’s history. Prior to the establishment of the Research Center, this written history was scattered throughout the county and often difficult for researchers to access. With the help of an archivist, a librarian, and many volunteers, the Research Center began organizing and cataloging this material in 1983. In 1986, Sheboygan County Landmarks, Ltd. began restoring the oldest standing building in the county, the Mill House in Sheboygan Falls. At the same time, the Historical Research Center needed larger quarters, and the restored Mill House proved to be the perfect location. The Research Center moved into the nearly complete Mill House in September 1987, and an open house was held in May 1988. The Mill House was listed in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Cole Historic District on December 12, 1988. The Research Center has continued to grow and thrive in the restored Mill House for more than two decades.
