HSHS Hospitals in Green Bay and Sheboygan Honored for Tissue Donation Efforts

Green Bay, Wis., April 27, 2023 – HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital in Green Bay, along with HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan, have been recognized for their exceptional contributions to tissue donation. The American Tissue Services Foundation (ATSF) has presented these hospitals with awards for surpassing the national average tissue donation rate.

Achieving Remarkable Donation Rates
In 2022, the combined tissue donation rate for HSHS St. Vincent, St. Mary’s, and St. Nicholas hospitals was an impressive 52%, significantly higher than the national average of 35 to 40 percent. This achievement highlights the hospitals’ dedication to providing life-saving tissue donation options to families.

Impacting Lives Through Donation
The efforts of these hospitals have notably aided over 4,300 tissue donation recipients in 2022 alone. Tissue donations, including bone, skin, heart valves, connective tissue, and veins, play a crucial role in over one million surgeries each year in the United States. A single tissue donor can impact the lives of more than 100 people, enhancing strength, mobility, and independence for patients in need.

Ken Nelson, Chief Nursing Officer at HSHS St. Vincent and St. Mary’s hospitals, emphasized the importance of working with families to understand the value of tissue donation. The hospitals receive ongoing training in tissue donation practices from ATSF and maintain dedicated donation committees to ensure sensitive and effective communication with families.
