1941: The Babi Yar massacre began during World War II, where nearly 34,000 Jews were killed by German forces in Kiev, Ukraine over two days.
1988: The Space Shuttle Discovery ascended powerfully from its launch pad at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. Mission STS-26 marked the return of American astronauts to space, following a 32-month pause due to the Challenger disaster in January 1986, a tragic event that claimed the lives of seven astronauts.

1979: Pope John Paul II’s visit to Ireland in 1979 was seen as an acknowledgement of the strong faith of the Irish by the Vatican. The Papal Mass in the Phoenix Park on Saturday September 29th was the largest single public gathering in the history of the state.
1907: The Cathedral grounds, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., is home to one of the few old growth forests still standing in the nation’s capital, the 5-acre Olmsted Woods. The Cathedral was completed 83 years to the day after it was begun (September 29, 1907–September 29, 1990).
