Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah)
SHEBOYGAN – In observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day, a special event titled “Remembering the Holocaust” will take place on Sunday, April 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Beth El Synagogue, located at 1007 North Ave. in Sheboygan. This collaborative event is brought to the community by the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra and Mead Public Library.
The centerpiece of the day will be a moving concert performed by the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra String Quartet, Sheboygan Symphony Chorus, and Sheboygan Symphony Chamber Singers. The program will include musical pieces by composers whose voices were tragically silenced by the Nazis, as well as a set of Hebrew Love Songs by Eric Whitacre.
Complementing the musical performances, Mead Public Library will showcase a selection of items from its Holocaust collection before and after the concert. The library’s collection, which was established in 2001, contains personal archives, documents, and photographs from Sheboygan’s Holocaust survivors. These items can be viewed year-round in the Fela and Anschel Warschaw Room on the library’s second floor.
This year’s Holocaust Remembrance Day, also known as Yom HaShoah, begins on Monday, April 17 at sundown and concludes on Tuesday, April 18 at nightfall. The year 2023 also commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in Warsaw, Poland. This event marked the largest Jewish uprising during World War II and was the first significant revolt against German occupation in Europe at the time.
Tickets for “Remembering the Holocaust” are priced at $25 for general admission seating. They can be purchased at the Weill Center Ticket Office, located at 826 N. 8th St. in Sheboygan, from Tuesday to Friday between 12 and 5 p.m., or by calling 920-208-3243.
